Backpacking Campout - Sept 15-17, 2017

Troop,

We will be having another pre hike this weekend for those going on the A.T. hike later this month.

This is an important part of preparation for the A.T. hike. It will be a great opportunity to check out your gear and make sure there will be no problems once you are on the A.T..

WHERE:
Newport News Park
Ranger Station Parking Lot ( on the campground side)

WHEN:
 Saturday September 9th 9:00 am

WHAT TO BRING:
Your hiking backpack packed as you will for the A.T..
Your Hiking boots that you will wear on the A.T..
Your water filtration system, we will review how to use this properly.
Drinking water

I will need at least one more adult to ensure YPT is satisfied. The more the merrier.

Troop 94,

Here is some more info for our upcoming backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail on September 15-17.  The trip will be near the Blue Ridge Parkway, roughly 30 miles west of Charlottesville.  The trip will include two itineraries as described in the first attachment.

We currently have 11 scouts and 11 adults signed up.  Right now, I only have payments from 2 scouts and consent forms from 3 scouts.  Please bring these (payment and consent form), to the Troop meeting on September 11.  The consent form and sign-up forms are enclosed.

Important notes:

1) All attendees for this event will need a Boy Scout physical on file with the troop (parts A, B and C).

2) All attendees need to go on a troop pre-hike, or have been backpacking with the troop before.  This shows that you can carry a backpack for 5 miles and you have suitable boots.  There is a pre-hike this coming weekend – see email from Spencer Ellingsworth.

3) Each participant will be responsible for bringing their own food.

4) Each participant will need a backpack and sleeping bag (quality lightweight gear is best - ask for recommendations if needed).  Backpacking tents and stoves can be provided by the troop.

5) All adults will need a certificate indicating that they have completed Boy Scout youth protection.

6) We will meet on Thursday, September 14, at Christ the King (CTK) at 7:00 pm as a final shakedown and to finalize transportation and patrol assignments.

7) We will meet at CTK on Friday, September 15 at 4:00 pm, and depart by 4:30 pm for the Appalachian Trail.  You must be in your “Class A” uniform.  Campers should bring your own bag/box meal for your Friday dinner.

Let me know if you have questions. Please reply to danmurri@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Dan Murri

Appalachian Trail Campout - Oct 7-9, 2016

Troop 94,

More info on the Appalachian Trail backpacking trip October 7-9 is enclosed.  For those planning to go, please fill out the Sign-Up and Consent forms.  I will have these at upcoming meetings as well.

There will be some pre-hikes over the upcoming weekends for physical training and to help you get used to your new gear (boots, packs, etc.).  These will take place locally, such as at the Noland Trail and Newport News Park.  Look for more info to come on pre-hikes.

As always, let me or Shane McDonald know if you have questions.

Thanks,
Dan Murri
